The office of the women’s commission of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana(GRASAG) University of Ghana Chapter organized a health conference on Saturday 29th September, 2018 with a general medical on sugar levels, blood pressure and breast cancer screening for all patrons.
Addressing the attendees at the SRC Union Building of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Afoah Amoateng a Midwifery Lecturer at the Atibe Nursing and Midwife Training School revealed that, a total of 6 million people suffer from breast cancer in both Ghana and Nigeria.
“Other organs of the body are imminent to attack by breast cancer” she added. She also advised that is prudent for one to visit the hospital for self-examination every month.
Mrs Cindy Ofori-Appiah, Founder of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Foundation Public Health Nurse who specializes in the Ovary syndrome that affects women also revealed that the cause of PCOS is unknown, however, factors such as genes, insulin resistance and overweight are most likely to cause PCOS.
Symptoms of PCOS as stated by Madam Cindy Ofori Appiah include hair loss, skin tag, oily face, infertility, miscarriage, depression and breast cancer.
She also prescribed some precautions like eating balanced diet, visiting the gym at least 3 times a week and avoiding smoking could help stifle PCOS.
As I interview attendees to know their opinion about the conference they intend organizing more of such programms for women and particularly the woccom.
