UG SRC: Fancy Gadam’s Candidate Elected as Speaker of SRC General Assembly

Indeed, Sankofa is not dead. After making a huge impact as a candidate for president in last year’s university of Ghana SRC election, Ewura Adams Karim, leader of the Sankofa team led his entire team to endorse team SLYDOM who were on the verge of losing in the runoff with team Clement and Afful to become SRC president and vice president.

Many have argued that if not for that last-minute intervention of team Sankofa which did not just come in the form of a verbal endorsement but one that got he and his entire team getting on the grounds to campaign massively for the victory of team SLYDOM, they probably wouldn’t have been occupying the SRC union building right now. This was the first time in the history of UGSRC an endorsement of a candidate in any UGSRC election had seen the endorsed team win.

Ewura was tipped for one of the highest offices in the cabinet of the SRC, projects and programs committee owing to his years of experience and expertise in projects and production management. Information we gathered was that the said appointment was made and later withdrawn. No explanation has been given and all plans to get Ewura to speak to the issues have proven futile.

In a keenly contested election last Friday, saw Ewura Adams Karim elected as the 61st speaker of the university of Ghana Student Representative Council General Assembly after pulling 59 votes of the total of 111 votes cast, beating Derrick Schandorf Ayirebi Acquah and B.A Razak who pulled 31 and 17 votes respectively. There were 4 spoilt ballots.

Ewura is a final year theatre for development student of the university of Ghana who over the years has worked very hard to put himself on the map both on and off campus. Many say the young man has a bright future as he is one of the most influential youth among his peers.

He represented Ghana at the Regional Final of the Hult prize Entrepreneurship competition in 2017. The Hult prize is the biggest student entrepreneurship contest in the world. He recently got nominated for the student activist category of the Inter-Tertiary Exploits Award about to take place later this year. He is arguably the most influential student in the university of Ghana right now.

Background of UG SRC Elections, Presidential Race

Ewura Karim, a presidential candidate who received an endorsement from musician, Fancy Gadam, lost alongside some other candidates.

Prior to the elections, Fancy Gadam recorded a video of himself urging students of the premier university to cast their votes in favour of Ewura Karim.

But in what appeared to be a keenly contested race, Karim placed third as he polled 1236 votes representing 20.98%. His running mate, Nana Akua Busia, is said to be the granddaughter of Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, former Prime Minister of Ghana.

Other candidates, Derrick Schandorf Ayirebi-Acquah polled 317 votes representing 5.30%; while Kingsley Adu-Otchere polled 330 votes representing 5.6%.

None of the candidates had the required 50% + 1 and as per the constitution of the SRC, there would be a runoff between Clement Bofa-Oppong and Sylvester Amoako who topped the polls.

Sylvester Amoako won the election after a successful runoff.

We wish Ewura all the very best in office as speaker and in life. Indeed, Sankofa is not dead.
