The University of Education, Winneba has launched its silver jubilee celebration. The year-long celebration is expected to set the tone for launching the university as an institution of worldwide acclaim.
Upon its establishment, the university was charged with the responsibility to educate teachers and produce professional educators to spearhead a new national vision of education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s efforts along the path of rapid economic and social development.
Launching the anniversary celebration on Thursday, Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, said the milestone achieved by the University will spur it on to play a leading role in Ghana’s drive to produce scholars.
These scholars, according to him, would be fully responsive to the realities and exigencies of contemporary Ghana.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the University of Education has been consistent with its mission of training competent professional teachers for all levels of education as well as conduct research, disseminate knowledge and contribute to educational policy and development in Ghana and beyond.
“We are inarguably the best in terms of the quality education delivery in the country. Our focus is to make the university a centre of excellence in the training of human resources in the world,” he averred.
Prof. Afful-Broni believes the consensus-building approach adopted by the university has become a better tool towards the transformational agenda of the university.
“Now we have a vibrant decision-making mechanism that is participatory, competitive and receptive to ideas. We are thus committed to gender-sensitive issues because we are rebuilding an all-inclusive academic community,” he assured.
Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni paid a glowing tribute to the forebears of the University for laying a solid foundation for the University.
He argues the University, its past, present and even future generations of products of the University owe such brains mountains of gratitude.
“We are consciously and systematically expanding academic programs. From 9 faculties, 2 schools and an institute in 2012, the University has grown in leaps and bounds and rubbing shoulders with those that were established before us,” he
He reveals, “Now all faculties in this university run doctoral programs and there is marked improvement in the physical infrastructure of the University.”
More remarkable he says, is the growth of the university in terms of internet access on the campuses of the university.
He explains the era where students gathered under trees and other obscure corners of the University for internet connection was over because students can now access the internet in their halls and rooms on campus.
