Radio broadcasting is the transmission of sound by radio waves to reach a wide number of people. Waves are broadcasted either by a land-based radio station or a satellite in Earth’s orbit. Broadcasting by radio take the form of AM and FM stations.
The transmission is an electromagnetic energy that is transferable through space, which allows sound to travel.
The use of radio has become evidently popular in Ghana. Radio was first introduced in Ghana then Gold Coast in the year 1935.
The first radio station was ZOY, set up by the then colonial governor to transmit BBC programs to their colonial residents and the elites. This radio station provided both education and educational information.
In 1954 Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was established, then known as Gold Coast Broadcasting System. GBC provided 2 radio services, radio 1 and radio 2, which operated for 15 and 1/5 hours on weekdays and 17 and 1/2 hours on weekends.
Radio 1 broadcasted in local language and radio 2 in English. These stations were based in Accra.
The first private radio station in Ghana is Joy FM based in Accra. Joy FM is owned by Multimedia Group Limited. It was established in 1995 by Kwasi Twum.
Currently, data from the National Communication Authority of Ghana reveals that there are 629 FM stations in Ghana out of which 459 are operational.
Currently 31 of these radio stations are public 474 commercial radio stations, 96 are community radio stations, 5 are public foreign radio stations and 23 are campus radio stations.
