Real Police work can be traced to have commenced in 1821 in Gold Coast, now Ghana when Great Britain took full control of the colony.

To ensure peace the security in the country, it became pertinent to provide a strong force of 700 Hausa men under the command of Captain Glover.

These men were brought in from Northern Nigeria to take part in the Ashanti wars on behalf of the British.

Fast forward, in 1894, the Gold Coast Police which is now known as the Ghana Police Service was formed. Four hundred out of seven hundred men were brought in from Northern Nigeria to serve under six European officers.

The depot staff, recruits, bandmaster under the command of Captain J.W. Barlow moved from the Accra Barracks to the present-day location and handed over the old buildings to the public work department in 1930.

The National Police Training School (N.P.T.S) was established in 1930 for the training of recruits, under direct officers (direct entry) and other ranks on refresher, reversion and promotion courses.

Qualifications and Competencies

• Must be a Ghanaian citizen by birth with no criminal record.
• Hold SSSCE/WASSCE Certificate with four (4) credits including English Language and at least a pass in Mathematics.
• A minimum age of 18 and not more than 25 years.
• Physically fit by Police standards
• Of a minimum height of 1.73 metres (5ft 8in) for Males and 1.63 metres (5ft 4in) for Females

How to Apply

Interested candidates should pick up application forms from the various Regional and District EMS Offices scattered across the country, complete them and send them through the EMS system to the address below. An application fee is to be paid at the EMS Offices. All applicants who were previously shortlisted are requested to re-apply, produce receipts of previous payments and pay the difference.
