The government, through the Ghana Education Service (GES), has disclosed plans to provide laptops for all teachers in the country.
The move is part of the national digitization process under which schools are being provided with WiFi facilities and also following from the experiences of COVID-19.
GES says that it has realized that much more attention ought to be given to the concept of blended education service delivery, which involves both face to face and online at all levels of pretertiary education.
In a letter to teacher groups, Director-General of GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa said that the laptops were to be owned as personal assets of the teachers.
He also indicated that it was mandator for teachers to have the laptops as materials for teaching will be uploaded on them.
Per the letter, the government will pay 70% of the cost of the laptop whereas the teachers pay 30% themselves through deductions from their salaries directly from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.
It is unclear when the procurement or distribution will start.
The GES said each teacher is to sign an acknowledgment form stating all personal particulars and also authorizing the deduction of the amount from their salaries.
