What Is Doctor of Pharmacy?

A Doctor of Pharmacy is a professional doctorate in pharmacy. In some countries, it is a first professional degree and a prerequisite for licensing to practice the profession of pharmacy or to become a clinical pharmacist.

Pharm D Top Up (Doctor of Pharmacy Top Up)

This two-year program is currently the new wave of pharmacy in Ghana. It has replaced the former: the four-year Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. Therefore, it has become incumbent for pharmacy professionals to upgrade or top up to the level of a Doctor of Pharmacy since it is the minimum requirement for qualification as a pharmacist in Ghana.

The university will award graduates a doctor of pharmacy degree attended upon completing the program. They will then sit for the pharmacy professional qualifying examination, for which they will be given a provisional pharmacist licence upon passing.

With this licence, they must take a one-year compulsory housemanship. They will be awarded a permanent licence by the pharmacy council to practice as a pharmacist in Ghana.

Unlike holders of bachelor of pharmacy degrees, the doctor of pharmacy graduates bear the doctor title, and their training is more clinically oriented.
