Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) is responsible for inspecting and regulating all exports in Ghana. This division is a paramilitary organization belonging to the operational division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
It is a part of Ghana’s national security. It is Ghana’s first line of defence at its borders and suppresses any form of external aggression and other crimes around its borders.
They have posts located strategically at all entry points and exits from the country. These points include harbours, land borders and airports. They operate at both approved and unapproved borders to intercept crimes. These crimes include money laundering, smuggling and terrorism.
Customs Excise and Preventive Service were formed in 1839 and headquarters in Accra. The Customs Act, Act 891 of 2015, is backed by the Customs Act to use different strategies to sanction culprits.
The head of all activities at CEPS is the Commissioner. The current Commissioner is Col. Kwadwo Damoah (RTD). He is responsible for all units under the collective through the sector.
The customs division has three main responsibilities:
1. Providing security for the public.
2. Mobilizing revenue from imports and exports.
3. Facilitating legitimate trade.
The customs division supervises all imports and exports restrictions.
Various departments under Customs work hand-in-hand to achieve their primary objectives. They are:
1. Ports operations
2. Preventive unit
3. Post clearance unit
4. Petroleum operations
5. Suspense regimes
6. Mining operations
To become a customs candidate in Ghana, a person should be between 18 and 35 years. All male candidates should be above 1.68m tall, while female candidates must be above 1.65m tall. They must be mentally and physically fit with no criminal records.
They shouldn’t have any form of disabilities as well. A person must have a Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or NAPCO certificate with a minimum of four credits, including English Language and Mathematics. Candidates who fit into this position must log onto www.gra.gov.gh website and fill out an application form.
The training process of customs personnel takes around six months or 24 weeks to be completed. This enables them to be equipped with appropriate skills and training to work seamlessly.

Ghana Customs Service Salary
The lowest Customs official earns around GH¢ 2,000.00 to GH¢ 5,000.00 per month. Senior officers earn between GH¢ 5,000.00 and GH¢ 7,000.00 per month. Professors earn about GH¢100,000.00 per year. Customs and border inspector salaries may range from GH¢ 630.00 to GH¢ 4,500.00 cedis per month. All Customs officials are entitled to bonuses and allowances.
