The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology of the Accra Technical University has outdoored a Professional Handbook for students undertaking the four-year Bachelor of Technology Medical Laboratory Science (MLS).
The 104-page Book contains the Background of the Medical Laboratory, Nature of Training, Code of Ethics and Patients’ Charter among other topics.
It would complement other study materials of the more than 240 MLS students currently pursuing the programme to give them comprehensive training.
Dr Henry Hackman, the Head of Department of the Medical Laboratory Technology, called for a more strategic approach in the training of medical laboratory scientists to enhance clinical diagnostic service delivery.
He said such a strategic approach was necessary due to the rapid advancements in technology in the field.
This, Dr Hackman, said would equip students with the right skills to help meet the current demands and challenges within the sector.
“Developments in the medical laboratory science practice throughout the world demand corresponding strategic overhaul in the training of the medical laboratory scientists in the 21stcentury”, he said.
Professor Edmund Ameko, the Vice Chancellor of ATU, said the Book would inform students about the rationale, philosophy, and training protocols of the programme and enlighten thems about the legal framework, functions, and operations of the Allied Health Professions Council.
Giving a background of the MLS programme, he said the University developed it to train more health professionals to bridge the gap in the health delivery system.
Prof Ameko stated that the programme would contribute to ensuring sustainable development in clinical laboratory diagnostics, public health systems and enhance medical research by training more personnel.
Mr Martin Amoamah, the Dean at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, urged students to make the Book the primary material of reference.
“This Handbook has been developed as a guide to policies and procedures and the information you will need throughout the duration of your study. It is a good reference material, which must be consulted always,” he stated.
