Plastics are a group of synthetic or naturally occurring materials that can be moulded when heat is applied. Plastics are light weighted, flexible, durable and inexpensive to produce, and these qualities have led to their widespread usage.
Most modern plastics are obtained from fossil fuel based chemicals.
Plastics have evolved from using natural plastic materials like gum to the use of chemical improvements of those materials like natural rubber and now to completely synthetic plastics.
The first considered man made plastic was invented in 1855 by Alexander Parkes, manufactured from cellulose and treated with nitric acid as a solvent.
The world’s first fully synthetic plastic was Bakelite. Leo Baekeland invented it in 1907 in New York, and Dow Chemical invented expanded polystyrene in 1954.
They are used for packaging, cups and insulation of buildings.
The chemical structure of plastics, which makes them durable, has made them resistant to natural degradation processes.
At least 14 tons of plastics end up in the ocean every year. A communication campaign infographic shows that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
There are different types of plastics, and we have commodity plastics, engineering plastics and high-performance plastics. The plastic industry includes the global production, compounding, conversion, and sale of plastic products.
